Places to Visit Near Tadoba Between Safaris
Safaris run in two slots a day, early morning and late afternoon. That leaves the middle of the day free, and on a two or three night stay you may have a free half day or more. These are the best places to spend that time, starting with the closest.
Drive times are from Aranyam Resort near Moharli Gate and are approximate. They depend on traffic and road conditions.
Right next door
Nature Interpretation Centre, Moharli Gate
Walking distance from Aranyam.
The forest department's visitor centre at Moharli Gate explains the reserve's history, its animals and the work done to protect them. It is a good first stop, especially with children. If you go before your first safari, you will know what to look for on the drive.
Within about half an hour
Junona Lake
Around 20 to 30 minutes, in the Junona buffer area.
A quiet, tree-lined lake on the edge of the forest, good for birdwatching or a calm evening walk. If you have a safari booked from Junona Gate, you can combine the two.
Irai Dam
Around 30 to 45 minutes, towards Chandrapur.
A large reservoir on the Irai River, built to supply water to the Chandrapur power station. The views are best after the monsoon, when the dam is full. Some areas may be closed to visitors, so stick to the public viewpoints.
Within about an hour
Mahakali Temple, Chandrapur
Around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
One of the most important temples in the region. Chandrapur is closely linked with the goddess Mahakali, and the temple gets crowded on Tuesdays and during the yearly Mahakali yatra. Go early in the day to avoid the rush.
Chandrapur Fort
Around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Chandrapur was once ruled by the Gond kings, and the walls and gates they built around the old city still stand, near where the Irai and Zarpat rivers meet. Both the fort and Mahakali Temple are in the city, so it is easy to see them on the same trip.
Vijasan Buddhist Caves, Bhadravati
Around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Old Buddhist caves cut into rock on the edge of Bhadravati town. They are small, peaceful and rarely crowded, which suits anyone who likes history and quiet places.
Ramdeghi Temple and Forest
Around 1 hour, near Chimur.
A temple inside the forest, with old stone shrines and a calm, green setting. Many visitors come as much for the drive and the scenery as for the temple.
A longer day trip
Anandwan, Warora
Around 1.5 hours.
Social worker Baba Amte started Anandwan in 1949 as a home and workplace for people affected by leprosy. It has grown into a large, self-run community where residents farm, make crafts and run small industries. It shows a very different side of the region from the forest.
How to fit these into your trip
On a one-night stay, stick to the Nature Interpretation Centre and Junona Lake. You will want to rest between safaris.
With two nights, add a half-day trip to Chandrapur for Mahakali Temple and the fort.
With three nights or more, add Ramdeghi, the Vijasan caves or Anandwan.
