Why the Buffer Zone Might Be Your Best Tadoba Safari
Most people planning a Tadoba trip think only about the core zone. It is the famous part, and it is where everyone tries to book first. Plenty of regular visitors book the buffer zone instead, and they have good reasons.
If you are new to how the reserve is laid out, start with our core zone vs buffer zone guide. This post covers why the buffer is worth choosing for its own sake.
1. Tigers live here too
The buffer zone covers about 1,101 sq km, which is bigger than the core. Animals do not stop at the boundary line, so tigers, leopards, sloth bears and wild dogs move through the buffer regularly. Some tigers live in the buffer full time.
No safari guarantees a sighting, in the core or the buffer. Still, plenty of visitors have their best Tadoba sighting on a buffer drive.
2. Permits are easier to get
Core zone permits are limited and often sell out weeks or months ahead, especially for weekends and holidays. Buffer permits are usually much easier to find, even close to your travel date. For a last-minute trip, the buffer zone is often what makes it possible.
3. It usually costs less
Buffer safaris usually cost less than core safaris. For families or groups booking several gypsies, the difference adds up.
4. Fewer vehicles on the road
With fewer gypsies around, buffer drives are calmer. When you do find an animal, you are less likely to be one of many vehicles crowded around it, so you get more time to watch and take photos.
5. You can go during the monsoon
The core zone closes for the monsoon, roughly July to September. Several buffer gates, including Agarzari, Devada and Junona, stay open through the rains. The forest is at its greenest then, with streams running and frogs, butterflies and birds everywhere. Sightings are harder, because animals have water everywhere and the leaves are thick, but you see a side of Tadoba that summer visitors never do.
6. More varied country
The buffer mixes forest with lakes, grassland and the edges of villages and farms. You see how people and wildlife share this land, which is a big part of the Tadoba story.
Buffer gates near Aranyam
Aranyam Resort is about 300 m from Moharli Gate (core). Four buffer gates are about 15 minutes away: Agarzari, Devada, Adegaon and Junona.
That makes it easy to mix your trip. You could do a core safari from Moharli one morning and a buffer safari from a nearby gate that afternoon or the next day.
Tips for a good buffer safari
We can arrange your buffer safari for you, subject to availability (terms and conditions apply). If you prefer to book yourself, use mytadoba.mahaforest.gov.in and check which buffer gates are open on your dates.
Buffer gates are usually closed on Wednesdays. Check before you book.
Morning drives are often the best bet, since animals are more active in the cool early hours.
Bring binoculars. Many buffer sightings are at a distance, across a lake or a clearing.
Be patient. Waiting quietly near a waterhole often pays off more than driving around.
So, is the buffer worth it?
Yes. It is cheaper, easier to book, quieter and open for more of the year, and you still have a real chance of seeing Tadoba's big cats. For many visitors, the best plan is one core safari plus one or two buffer safaris.
